Harlem Riots of 1943

Hello Everyone. This is Marcela, I am currently taking ENN 195 class with Prof. Rogers-Copper at LaGuardia Community College. In class we staring to talk about the Harlem riots. Today’s blog is to talk about the Harlem riots of 1943. According to many articles the Harlem riots of 1943 was due to a race issue. A wounded African American solider Robert Bandy wanted to know why an African American women was being arrested for disorderly conduct. When he approach the officer and alleged victim he was shot by a white police officer, before this the solider and officer throw a couple punches, because the solider believe the women was being arrested on unfair grounds. All the commotion between the officer and solider lead to a crowd gathering around them and someone miss understood what was going on. They believe that the officer shot and killed Bandy, and a riot erupted which was held for two days. Many people were left injured and some die, there was a lot of property damage. All this lead to New York City Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia go to the scene to restore order.

Free Blog

Hello Everyone, my name is Marcela Romero. I am currently taking Prof. Rogers-Copper class,Violence in American Art and Culture. In class we are going to start talking about the Harlem riots of 1935. last week Prof. Rogers-Copper ask us to check some websites to have an idea of what are the Harlem riots and we also visited the Archive room at LaGuardia Community College to see artifact and primary sources of the Harlem Riots. I was checking one of the websites he posted and one of them was in Wikipedia. it gave a brief discussion about the Harlem riots. It says that the riots started on March 19,1935 at 2:30 pm in the Kress Five and Ten Store. An employee there caught a black Puerto Rican 16- year old kid stealing a candy bar, his captor threaten the kid whose name is Lino that he was going to take him to the basement and beat the hell out of him. Such comment made the kid bit the employers hand in an attempted to ran away , but the manger intervene and call the police. while they waited for the police to arrive a woman was yelling that they've beaten the child up and ambulance came and treated the employees wounds, this had confirm the woman story and that the kid was beaten to death. This woman was arrested for disorderly conduct and the Kress Five and Ten store was closed early. Later in the early evening a group called Young Liberators started a demonstration [like a strike] outside the store, drawing thousands of people and they started a distribution  of papers with the headline "Child Brutally Beaten" and another one said a 12 year old got beaten to death for taking a piece of candy. Chaos erupted an at some point some one throw a rock at the store window, glass shattering and a riot has began.
This incident reminded me of what going on today. For example what's happening in Ferguson, Missouri. with the guy Mike Brown, who allegedly had an argument with a police officer Darren Wilson and things heated up and a shooting happen where Brown was shot and died there. After the the incident was broadcast through news, newspapers and social media, riots started  striking all over Ferguson and the united states.
Another incident was what happen to Trevon Martin who was shot by a neighborhood watcher, Zimmerman who claimed the teen was beating him up and believe he was armed, He called the police and the police told him not to follow him that help was on its way, Zimmerman refuse and shot Martin, Killing him.
My point is that it seem many things that happen in the past are staring to happen in the present. Its like history is repeating it self. riots always happen in Florida[ were this incident took place] and also nation wide. Riots are something people do to protest for what going on, the injustice that happening to them and riots help specially with social media now, it shows the world know what going on.

A Potential Theme in Cesar's Column

Hello Everyone, my name is Marcela Romero. I am a student at LaGuardia Community College taking Prof.Copper, Violence in America Art and Culture English class. In class we been  discussing the book Caesar's Column and the major themes in this book. a theme that caught my attention a lot is religion, purity  and women. i feel that this is important because religion plays a big role on how we manage things and what are our morals. Women are always at the bottom of the chain. They are seen as parasites. Many believe that women can't archive anything. Society view of a women is to,be a perfect wife, have children and take care of her children and husband. Religion plays a big role because they the ones who came up with this idea that women should be the "perfect wife" and that they should stay pure till marriage. Religion and purity go along because the ideology that women should stay pure till marriage and a women who isn't pure till marriage are view as sinners. The view of women have change a lot but we still have that ideology that women should stay pure till marriage and that they have to be the perfect house wife.  Women are seen as shameful and are a distraction for men. with that being said women should have a role in society, many people still believe that. We see this in today's society because women are paid lower wages then men. when it comes to politics when were once denied the right to vote and they are seen as minorities. Society believes women can't become better politicians than men, because women are too sensitive. I believe society still has that religion ideology therefore they underestimate women.

Caesar's Column By:Ignatius Donnelly: Reaction 1

Hello everyone, this is Marcela and I am currently taking violence in art and culture class at LaGuardia Community College. In class we been reading Caesar’s Column (a story of the twentieth century) by Donnelly. Reading this book something came up to mind. For example, the way that woman are portrayed in the story so far. If we take the conversion between Gabriel and Max on the beginning of chapter five, they start talking about the two young ladies they saw (previously in the book ) in a carriage that is property of the prince Cabano. Gabriel is intrigue with lady that is younger from the two. He asks Max if he know anything about her and Max replies that they might be the Prince’s mistress, upon hearing this Gabriel is shocked. He can’t believe such a fine lady can reduce herself and become a mistress to the prince. He starts talking about freedom and how wrong it is for a woman to sell her body. We often see this throughout history that woman are frown upon because many choose to sell their body for a living these is often seen as something sinful. Continuing with the topic of woman on pg. 38, we see how they see woman as a parasite. ”women are not in their best fortunes strong, but want will perjure the ne'er-touched vestal.” “But he need not have confined this observation to women. The strongest resolves of men melt in the fire of want like figures of wax…where virtue inevitably breaks. Morality in man or woman is a magnificent flower which blossoms only in the rich soil of prosperity…” “Dignity, decency, honor, fade away when man or woman is reduce to shabby, shameful, degrading, cruel wretchedness. Before the clamors of the stomach the soul is silent”. The concept that the passage is saying is woman are a man distraction, when woman are placed in front of man they forget who they are and forget what their role in society, which is helping the community prosper. Women are the want of men but not necessary the need of men. They ignite the fire in men and due to the fire the men (figures) turn to wax. With that being said Morality should only be consider a man trait rather than a women. A women isn't anything in society but a house wife, bringing the religion moral that women shouldn't be educated but rather be teach their role in society. Which is staying pure until marriage and then baring children and being a housewife. “Purity is natural to woman…god never placed such a majestic and noble countenance over a corrupt soul. The face is transparent; the spirit looks out of the great eyes; and it is a spirit of dignity, nobleness, grace and goodness”. The ideal that if a woman is pure she already lost her dignity, nobleness, grace and goodness and now is replace with a corrupt soul. Religion plays a role her because god is who created a woman out of a man’s rib, he made her pure and noble and with the idea that she will serve her man. Also the idea that a woman that if a women isn't pure she is degrading and shameful comes from the religious view. In conclusion I claim that these passages theme overall Is how woman are view and why they view like this.

The Destruction Of New York

I am Marcela Romero and I am taking violence art and culture class at LaGuardia Community College. Recently in class we were analyzing the story “The Destruction of Gotham “by Joaquin Miller. I believe this man is quite intelligent and the way he describes people and places with such sense that it’s like he is predicting the future. Although the book took place in an early time of America, you can connected to what’s going on today in present time. I say this because in his novel on page 37 he states “a coarse man of this city once remarked, with more force than grammar, “that in New York a man can live as many lives as he has money”. Matherson now lived many lives, for he has much money.” The author, Miller implies that a person that has money can do what he/she wants because money gives them that power. If that statement is true we can apply it to present times and say yes Miller is right. A person that has money can have as many lives as he/she can. We can say that it’s true because in the society we live in, we have seen this happen. The people who have money are more privileged and have an advantage against the poor. But are they deserving of this privileged? The poor that work hard for these rich people, what do they get? Aren’t or shouldn’t they also be deserving of their own hard labor? Why should the poor be seen as not privileged or undeserving? Why should the settle for bits of pieces to survive. In New York we see a lot of this class system. As Miller describes that this man which I’m guessing is Matherson said that in New York one person that has money can have more lives than the one how doesn’t. In the story we see that New York has a wide range of disparity between the rich and the poor. The poor have to work hard for small wages while the rich take most of the profit.

Reaction to the Flour Riots 1877

Hi, my name is Marcela. This is a reaction from my Violence in American Art and Culture class readings. We been reading and discussing riots in the early years in America. Why and how these riots have occurred. We also have discuss if these riots are justified or not. For example, the flour riots. In my opinion I believe that these riots are justified. We all need food to survive, it’s one of our essential needs to live, if they take our only means of survival, the lack of food and water would make us sick and die of dehydration and starvation. In the book the author mentions that the people aren't dying of hunger but are close. He talks about how these people are starving and riots are erupting to stop the hunger. He describes the people who are on these riots as opportunist and they have no right to have riots because they aren't starving or dying from the lack of food. They are just merely starving and they are complaining for the flour price going up. The author seem really indecisive throughout the article. He first starts saying how these people are complaining about flour prices and how they shouldn't and yet he says he understands and somehow he agrees with them. Does the author really understand these people?

Reactions to "1877 rail riots" article

Hi my name is Marcela. I am reacting to the “1877 riots: the rail riots of 1877” article, because I feel like the author seems to despise the people who are going on riots and I also want to react to the strikes and unions. In general I believe that riots/strikes lead to create unions. For better or worse now we have unions. In the article the author talks about how he believes the people that are in these riots should be treated like dirt. In my opinion people shouldn't be treated like that, because we all humans and we are equal. What I want to focus on is about when a group of people go on a strike because of working conditions or because of wage salaries, the owners of the job place, in the article the owners of the railroads decide to fire the people on strike and hire new employees for a lesser wage. I feel this is unfair because the people who are replacing this employers are getting pay very low and now the people who were employed and had a somewhat stable job are jobless. Although they are going on strike for a good cause, they are being let to suffer for their actions. Should these people keep going on riots, even if it means losing their jobs? Is going on strike/riots for everyone benefit worth it? I believe the people who replaced these workers that are on strikes aren’t valuing themselves, because they allowing these “bosses” take advantages of them. Take for example today’s economy and what is going on in many of  our states, people in the fast food chain and other companies are protesting for the minimum wage to go up and better working conditions. We can reflect that back then in 1877 rail riots and other riots that they asking for the same thing, better working conditions and better wages.
