A Potential Theme in Cesar's Column
Hello Everyone, my name is Marcela Romero. I am a student at LaGuardia Community College taking Prof.Copper, Violence in America Art and Culture English class. In class we been discussing the book Caesar's Column and the major themes in this book. a theme that caught my attention a lot is religion, purity and women. i feel that this is important because religion plays a big role on how we manage things and what are our morals. Women are always at the bottom of the chain. They are seen as parasites. Many believe that women can't archive anything. Society view of a women is to,be a perfect wife, have children and take care of her children and husband. Religion plays a big role because they the ones who came up with this idea that women should be the "perfect wife" and that they should stay pure till marriage. Religion and purity go along because the ideology that women should stay pure till marriage and a women who isn't pure till marriage are view as sinners. The view of women have change a lot but we still have that ideology that women should stay pure till marriage and that they have to be the perfect house wife. Women are seen as shameful and are a distraction for men. with that being said women should have a role in society, many people still believe that. We see this in today's society because women are paid lower wages then men. when it comes to politics when were once denied the right to vote and they are seen as minorities. Society believes women can't become better politicians than men, because women are too sensitive. I believe society still has that religion ideology therefore they underestimate women.

Hi Marcela,
ReplyDeleteIt's always enlightening to explore gender roles and the role of women in works of literature, especially in works written over a century ago. It seems to me like you are arguing that women are in some ways look down upon in Donnelly's, and you are claiming that this issue reflects the attitudes towards women of Donnelly's time period. Furthermore, you connect your ideas to our current society.
I think you can probably expand on this idea and find some passages from the novel that can back up your claim, in order to write about it for your second essay, because this is a very interesting topic.
